چکیده

This section looks back to some ground-breaking contributions to public health, reproducing them in their original form and adding a commentary on their significance from a modern-day perspective. This month Mary Norval reviews the 1977 paper by Michael Fisher andMargaret Kripke on ultraviolet light irradiation and its relationship to ultraviolet carcinogenesis. The original paper is reproduced by permission of Margaret Kripke.

Evaluation of solar ultraviolet radiation in Zanjan city using the ultraviolet index

Background and Objective: Monitoring the amount of ultraviolet radiation from sunlight can provide a basis for assessing people's exposure, raise public awareness and warn people against this radiation. Measuring the sun's ultraviolet index over a working period is an accurate choice to achieve this goal. Materials and Methods: In this study, the amount of solar UV index in one of the outdoor ...

Mechanisms of UV-induced immunosuppression.

Ultraviolet radiation (UV), in particular the UVB range, suppresses the immune system in several ways. UVB inhibits antigen presentation, induces the release of immunosuppressive cytokines and causes apoptosis of leukocytes. UVB, however, does not cause general immunosuppression but rather inhibits immune reactions in an antigen-specific fashion. Application of contact allergens onto UV-exposed...

Oral nicotinamide protects against ultraviolet radiation-induced immunosuppression in humans.

Cutaneous immunity, which is a key defence against the development of skin cancers, is suppressed by even small doses of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Preventing this UV-induced immunosuppression may therefore reduce the incidence of skin cancer. Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) has immune-protective and cancer-preventive effects against UV radiation in mice, and we have shown previously that topical ni...

Prevention of ultraviolet radiation-induced immunosuppression by sunscreen in Candida albicans-induced delayed-type hypersensitivity

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced immunosuppression leading to skin cancer has received increased attention in previous years. The present study aimed to investigate the immunoprotection offered by Anthelios sunscreen in a mouse model of Candida albicans‑induced delayed‑type hypersensitivity. Anthelios sunscreen was applied to the skin on the dorsal skin of BALB/c mice treated with a sub‑eryth...
